Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are often recommended as the easiest way for beginners to invest: buy one product and own a basket of stocks. In Nigeria, several of them have had a very strong 2026.

According to the NGX Daily Official List for ETFs (27 October 2026), some Nigerian ETFs are up more than 90% this year, and one is reported at 291% year-to-date.

The same NGX data also shows a problem that most ETF articles don't mention: liquidity. This article covers both.

12Meristem Growth ETFMERGROWTH122.20−64.78%

Main points:

• 9 of 12 ETFs show double-digit gains for the year.

• Equity ETFs (industrial, banking, top-30) beat the bond ETF (+1.84%) by a wide margin.

• NewGold (+49.4%), which tracks physical gold, gave naira investors a strong hedge.

• Both Meristem ETFs are deeply negative, which shows that ETFs with similar names can have very different results.

The other side: the entire ETF market is worth ₦44 billion

From the NGX Market Capitalisation Report (27 October 2026):

• Total ETF market cap: ₦44.18 billion, which is 0.0196% of the ₦225 trillion exchange.

• Dangote Cement alone is worth about 540 times more than every conventional ETF on the NGX combined.

What trading looks like day to day

On 30 October 2026, the NGX Daily Summary recorded:

• ETP total: 847 trades and 199,447 units across all 12 ETFs.

• At closing prices, that is roughly ₦140 million in ETF turnover (NaijUp estimate: price × volume).

• On the same day, equities traded roughly ₦88 billion, about 600 times more.

On the 27 October Official List, the "last business done" quantity for several ETFs was very small:

ETFLast trade quantity (27/10/26)
SIAML Pension ETF 401 unit
NewGold ETF1 unit
Vetiva Industrial ETF1 unit
Lotus Halal Equity ETF1 unit
Meristem Value ETF2 units
Vetiva Griffin 30 ETF3 units
Stanbic IBTC ETF 305 units

Why liquidity matters more than the headline return

1. A tiny trade can move the price

When a closing price is set by a one-unit trade, the "YTD return" can partly reflect who happened to trade that day and not only how the underlying basket performed.

2. Look at the bid–ask spread

Using the 27 October bid and ask prices:

• Lotus Halal ETF: bid ₦127.91, ask ₦115.65. The quote is inverted, which is a sign of an inactive order book.

• SIAML Pension ETF 40: bid ₦1,780.10, ask ₦1,588.42.

• NewGold: bid ₦83,112, ask ₦84,000, a spread of about 1%.

Wide or inconsistent quotes mean you may not be able to buy or sell at the price you see.

3. 52-week ranges can be extreme

SIAML Pension ETF 40 shows a 52-week high of ₦17,441.20 and a low of ₦460. Stanbic IBTC ETF 30 shows ₦7,003.96 vs ₦490. Ranges this wide in thin markets can come from isolated trades or unit changes. Confirm with the fund manager before using these figures for decisions.

4. Compare market price with NAV

Every ETF publishes a Net Asset Value (NAV), which is what its holdings are actually worth. In thin markets, the NGX price can sit well above or below NAV. Paying a large premium to NAV means overpaying for the same basket.

Smart ways to invest in Nigerian ETFs

1. Check NAV first. Fund managers publish it on their websites and in SEC weekly reports.

2. Use limit orders, not market orders, so you control the price you pay.

3. Prefer the more active ETFs. On 30 October, Stanbic IBTC ETF 30 (314 trades) and SIAML Pension ETF 40 (176 trades) were the most traded.

4. Know what's inside. "ETF 30" products track the top 30 stocks, so they're heavily weighted toward MTN, Dangote Cement and the big banks.

5. Plan to hold. Low liquidity costs the most when you need to sell in a hurry.

6. Consider mutual funds as an alternative. They are bought and sold at NAV directly with the fund manager.
